To express love and gratitude towards the contribution of women to our lives and society and to honour the power and struggles of women, DPS Budgam celebrated the International Women’s Day on March 29, 2018. (Delayed to due to extended winter break). The event was hosted by the students of class 8th who presented a special programme on this occasion including a group song, skit, short film, dance, powerpoint presentation, role play, speeches etc to enable everyone to realize the true essence of the day that lies in identifying the rights and power of women and giving them a stature that they deserve. The students’ focus was on injustice towards women, gender equality, and rights of women, their education and health. Through the medium of such programmes, the students wanted to tell the society that woman can’t wait for an external agency to empower them. A woman has to realize her worth and power and understand that only she can empower herself.
The Chief Guest Professor Suraiya Matto and the other chief invitees namely Dr Nusrat Andrabi and Professor Fareeda Naqshbandi appreciated the efforts of the students.
Professor Suraiya said “Women have come a long way but still much is awaited. They must go forth with courage and determination.”
She remembered many women in the Kashmiri society for their great role. She instructed the girls to follow the rich legacy. She further added that women in rural areas must be activated. The unending violence against women is quite disturbing and we must make sincere efforts to end it. She appealed to the authorities not to be harsh with women and she finally advised the students not to remain confined to the celebration of the day only but to feel the dignity of a woman.
Dr.Nusrat Andrabi congratulated all the students she said, “God has given privilege to a woman to be a mother. She is the life giver and the beautiful creation of God”. She spoke about Zainab and Asifa particularly and gave the reference of Nirbhaya. Nearly six years have passed and we are still waiting for justice. She advised the students to respect mother as mother’s lap is the most beautiful place in the world.
The Pro VC DPS Budgam Madam Mumtaz-un-nisa Soz who graced the occasion was enchanted to see the enthusiastic efforts of the students.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by the Honorable Principal Mr Mehfooz Aslam.
